Obesity and Diabetes

Obesity is the biggest risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes. Together, both conditions cause many secondary diseases and therefore reduce quality of life and often life expectancy too. Bariatric surgery can mitigate the severity and consequences of type 2 diabetes and also reduce the existing symptoms.

Not only does weight loss improve the clinical picture; the metabolic processes and hormonal balance can also be changed by bariatric surgery. So bariatric surgery can also bring about major changes in people who are less overweight if they already suffer from type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.

Consequences of obesity and diabetes

Type 2 diabetes can cause serious harm to health, including circulatory disorders in the legs and feet, kidney diseases (diabetic nephropathy) and damage to the eyes or retina (diabetic retinopathy). Elevated blood lipid levels can also cause atherosclerosis and lead to a heart attack or stroke in the long term.

Interdisciplinary patient care is both necessary and sensible to prevent or mitigate secondary diseases caused by diabetes and obesity.
