Surgical department

The surgical department at the Mannheim University Teaching Hospital has numerous centres of excellence. The hospital has been awarded certification as a cancer centre by the German Cancer Society on the basis of the high quality of its tumour treatment. For their successful fight against cancer, the experts of the surgical department work in structured cooperation with other specialist sectors in the Interdisciplinary Tumour Centre Mannheim (ITM). The surgical department has been certified for the excellence of its medical care in obesity-related and liver surgery.

The experienced surgeons also operate with the latest generation of the Da Vinci robotic surgical system. Despite its minimally invasive surgical techniques, this high-tech device provides a 3D representation of the area to be operated in Ultra HD resolution and accurate in every detail. The movements of the surgeon’s fingers and hands are transferred precisely to the robotic arms with the Da Vinci system filtering out even the tiniest tremor of the human hands. The robot never performs procedural steps independently but functions solely via human control at the console.

With the hybrid operating facilities in the surgical centre patients can undergo a radiological examination as well as surgery. This saves valuable time, allowing especially patients for vascular surgery to benefit from this hybrid operating theatre.
