The University Medical Centre Mannheim is a non-profit corporation. Operating as a maximum service general hospital, the medical centre has at its disposal a broad spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic resources.  Alfred Dänzer is Chief Executive Officer, and Prof. Dr. med. Michael Hennerici, is medical director. The hospital employs over 4,500 people, including 1,200 nurses.

Besides medical treatment and care, science plays the key role in the university hospital. The hospital's medical teaching and research staff is headed by the dean, Prof. Dr. med. Klaus van Ackern. The faculty is part of the 600-year-old Heidelberg University. The faculty's scientific activities, including basic and clinical research, are reflected by numerous scientific publications, as well as conferences and seminars organized by its members.

Teaching facilities, including lecture halls, classrooms, and a large medical library host more than 1,400 medical students.

The hospital cooperates in numerous ways with other scientific and healthcare institutions, including the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Heidelberg University Hospital, University of Mannheim, Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, and various other hospitals and medical facilities of the city and region.
