Research profile
Harald Langer studied medicine at the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg and TU Munich, Germany. After training in general and interventional cardiology and conducting postdoctoral research in the Experimental Immunology Branch at the NIH, Bethesda, USA, he was appointed in 2018 W3 Professor for Cardiovascular Inflammation at the University of Tübingen, Germany and later that year Director of the Department for Cardiology, Angiology and Intensive Care Medicine and Professor of Cardiology at the University Heart Center Lübeck, Germany. There, he founded the section for Translational Cardiology. In 2022, he moved to Mannheim/Heidelberg and now works as there as Deputy Director of the I. Medical Clinic at the University Clinic Mannheim. In 2024, he was furthermore appointed as W3 Professor for Cardiovascular Systems Biology at Heidelberg University.
Prof. Langer is a principal investigator at the European Centre for Angioscience (ECAS), is active within the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (Mannheim/ Heidelberg) and the newly founded Helmholtz Institute for Translational AngioCardioScience (HI-TAC). His main research areas include interventional cardiology and structural heart diseases with a particular interest in diseases of the mitral valve. He also has a basic and translational focus in Cardioimmunology and Cardiovascular Systems Biology.

Research profile
Reinhard Sauter studied medicine at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, Germany and the University of Zürich, Switzerland. He joined the group of Prof. Langer at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen in 2010, investigating the functional relevance of the anaphylatoxin receptor C3aR for platelet function and arterial thrombus. Dr. Sauter completed his residency at Tübingen University Hospital and the University Heart Center Lübeck, Germany in 2020. Since March 2023, he has been working as a Senior Physician in the I. Medical Clinic at the University Hospital Mannheim.
His main research areas include immune cell interaction involving platelets in cardiovascular diseases, interventional cardiology and structural heart diseases with a particular interest in diseases of the mitral valve. Dr. Sauter has received several awards for his scientific work, including the Basic Science Poster Award from the DGK (2011), the Rudi Busse-Young Investigator Award (2012), and the Hans Kaffarnik Award from the DGAF (2018). He is the author and co-author of numerous scientific publications.

Nada Alnaggar completed her Bachelors of Medicine and of Surgery at Cairo University. She promoted as a doctor of medicine at the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen in the Cardiology department. She is currently part of the clinical arm of our work group.

Research profile
Manuela Sauter studied Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz, Austria, and received her Master of Science degree in 2010. She then joined the group of Prof. Langer at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, Germany, for her PhD, investigating the role of dendritic cells in atherosclerosis, and received a Dr. rer. nat. in Biochemistry in 2019. After her PhD, Dr. Sauter continued to work as a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Prof. Langer at the University Hospital of Lübeck and subsequently at the University Hospital of Mannheim.
Manuela Sauter's research focuses on the role of immune cells in cardiovascular diseases and mechanisms of atherosclerosis. She is a DZHK member and active within the newly founded Helmholtz Institute for Translational AngioCardioScience (HI-TAC).

Research profile
Jingyuan Zhang studied veterinary medicine at Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University. During her bachelor thesis, she researched the inhibition of histone late glycosylation end product formation by catechins. She got her PhD degree from China Agricultural University in the area of inflammation and circulatory system in 2020, mainly on the mechanisms of pulmonary hypertension and its relationship with inflammation. During her PhD study, she also participated in other studies on endogenous hormones and immune response and published an article in Cell as a co-author. She finished her postdoctoral studies at Zhejiang University in 2024, studying macrophage ferroptosis and pulmonary veno-occlusive disease. She is now a part of the group Cardiovascular Systems Biology since August 2024 and is working on inflammation and atherosclerosis

Yohanes C. Wibowo is a physician by training graduated from Universitas Sebelas Maret, Indonesia. He continued a master’s in Molecular Medicine in Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, Germany and successfully finished his master thesis in German Cancer Research Center/Deutsche Krebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ), Germany under supervision of Prof. Jochen Utikal. After earning his master’s degree, he worked as a staff scientist and pursued a PhD in Experimental Pharmacology Mannheim, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, Germany under supervision of Prof. Thomas Wieland funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). He further joins the group of Prof. Harald Langer in the I. Medical Clinic at the University Hospital Mannheim, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. His research focuses on vascular control on organ function and pathological conditions

Research profile
Xiao Liang received his Bachelor's degree in Clinical Medicine from Harbin Medical University in 2012. He continued at the same university and completed his Master's degree in 2015, where his research focused on parthenogenetic embryonic stem cells and their effects on myocardial infarction in mice. From 2015 to 2023, he worked on research related to immune-inflammatory responses and atherosclerosis. His studies involved examining immune cell functions and vascular changes associated with atherosclerosis.
In September 2023, he began MD studies at Heidelberg University in Germany. His current research investigates immune cell surface markers in atherosclerosis, with the aim of better understanding their role in atherosclerosis. His background includes experience with mouse models of cardiovascular disease, flow cytometry, and basic molecular biology techniques. His work has primarily focused on the intersection of immunology and cardiovascular pathology.

Research profile
Serena Gregori studied medicine at the University of Insubria in Varese, Italy, graduating with top honours. During her studies, she focused on emergency medicine and intensive care. Her research primarily addressed thoracic trauma, which became the subject of her thesis. Immediately after graduating, she moved to Mannheim, where she is currently conducting a doctorate in the research group of Prof. Harald Langer in the cardiovascular systems biology field. Her work centres on investigating the dynamic interactions between immune and endothelial cells. As a member of the CRC1366 project, she has the opportunity to further investigate vascular biology and engage with other researchers in the field, fostering collaboration and advancing her expertise in cardiovascular science.

Research profile
Shanshan Zhang completed her undergraduate and master’s studies in Clinical Medicine in China, where she also obtained her national medical practitioner license. She subsequently pursued a second master’s degree in Forensic Science at King’s College London, United Kingdom. Since 2022, she has been working toward her medical doctorate at Heidelberg University. She is a member of CRC1366, CRC1425, and the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK). Her research focuses on the regulation of neovascularization in myocardial infarction through platelet-specific C5a/C5aR1 signaling.

Research profile
Michel Gramberg studied Chemical Biology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. During his bachelor thesis, he worked on the novel hyperpolarized nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy technique “bullet-DNP” in the group of Dr. Benno Meier. In the group of Prof. Dr. Anne S. Ulrich as part of his master thesis, he investigated variants of the derived antimicrobial peptide KIA21 with a set of biological and spectroscopical assays. He is part of the group Cardiovascular Systems Biology since December 2023 and is working on his PhD on receptor interactions between immune cells and platelets in the context of atherosclerosis.

Winfried März studied medicine and gained his title of specialist physician in laboratory medicine at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, and his habilitation at the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg, Germany. He continues his research from a professorship at the Clinical Institute of Medical and Chemical Laboratory Diagnostics at the Medical University Graz, Austria, in emeritus and is a research scientist at the Medical Clinic III (Cardiology Pneumology, and Angiology), Medical Faculty Heidelberg and the Medical Clinic I (Cardiology), Medical Faculty Mannheim at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He is also the Director of Academy and Business Development Manager at SYNLAB Germany.
Research profile
Markus Kleber studied biology with a focus on molecular biology at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg. During his doctoral thesis he worked on translation initiation signals in procaryotes. In 2008 he joined the Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health (LURIC) study group from Prof. Winfried März and his research interests changed to genetic and biochemical markers of cardiovascular diseases. Since 2011 he has been working for the medical faculty Mannheim and was principal investigator of EU-funded projects. Since 2020, he has also been working on the genetic diagnosis of cardiomyopathies and lipometabolic disorders at the SYNLAB MVZ für Humangenetik Mannheim. He joined the I. Medical Clinic at the University Clinic Mannheim in April 2025 and currently works for the EU-funded project TO_AITION.

Research profile
Angela P. Moissl studied Applied Geosciences at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, and received her Master of Science degree in 2014. She completed certified postgraduate training in Environmental Toxicology (Ecotoxicologist), accredited by the German Chemical Society (GDCh) and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry – German Language Branch (SETAC GLB). She further specialised in statistical data analysis and biomonitoring and joined the Institute of Nutritional Sciences at Friedrich Schiller University Jena for her doctoral research. Her PhD, conducted within the BMBF-funded Nutricard project, focused on statistical modelling of nutritional and metabolic biomarkers in relation to cardiovascular mortality using data from the LURIC cohort.
Since 2016, Miss Moissl has been working with the Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health (LURIC) study, contributing to multiple biostatistics, epidemiology, and biomarker analysis projects. Since 2023, she has been based at the Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, where she is currently responsible for coordinating and implementing the 20-year follow-up of the LURIC cohort. In the EU-funded project TIMELY (Horizon 2020), she applies biostatistical and data mining methods to investigate time-sensitive cardiovascular risk factors. Since April 2025, she has been involved in the To_Aition consortium, focusing on the interplay between inflammation, depression, and cardiovascular outcomes.
Her research integrates advanced statistical methodology, biomarker-based risk prediction, and interdisciplinary analyses of environmental, nutritional, and genetic factors. She is particularly interested in bridging environmental toxicology and clinical epidemiology to advance understanding of cardiometabolic and health outcomes.
